Aftercare Instructions

There are certain instructions that you need to follow either prior to, or after a specific dental procedure.

After Placement of Dental Implants

Here's how you should take care of your teeth after getting dental implants:

Diet

Refrain from drinking or eating hot foods and liquids, but drink plenty of fluids. On the day of your surgery, remember to eat soft foods and remember to return back to your normal diet as soon as the pain subsides.

Swelling

After placement of dental implants, swelling is a normal occurrence. To alleviate discomfort, use an ice pack, or towel filled with ice to the area. For the first 36 hours, make sure to apply ice continuously, as often as you can.

Bleeding

For the first 24 hours, it’s normal to see some blood in your saliva. If you suffer from excessive bleeding, bite on a gauze pad by placing it directly under the area for half an hour. If it’s still bleeding continuously, call us for more instructions.

Pain

As soon as you begin to feel that, the effect of the anesthetic is wearing off, take medication to deal with the pain. If you’re suffering from moderate pain and discomfort, take a Tylenol or Ibuprofen every three hours. If you’re dealing with severe pain, don’t take any more than the prescribed medication. If you’re allergic to medication like Tylenol and ibuprofen, or if your physician has instructed you not to take it, refrain from using these medications.

Antibiotics

We’ll prescribe you antibiotics after your surgery. Make sure to take them regularly.

Oral Hygiene

Take good care of your oral hygiene because it helps in speeding up the recovery process. If you’ve been prescribed a specific mouth rinse, make sure to use it twice every day, after breakfast and dinner. Make sure that you rinse your mouth for at least 30 seconds before spitting. Rinse your mouth with warm water and salt after dinners, and brush your teeth gently, carefully avoiding sensitive areas. Make sure to keep physical activity to a minimum, because it can cause increased swelling and bleeding.
